Preventing Prostate Cancer With Selenium
A report analyzing information from 12 studies was featured in the July issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on preventing prostate cancer. They found that higher blood and toenail levels of selenium were associated with lower risks for preventing prostate cancer. Studies have shown higher levels of selenium may help preventing prostate cancer. Data from the 12 studies involved 12,254 total participants, including 5,007 cases of prostate cancer. The research revealed prostate cancer decreased with increasing plasma levels of selenium. Three studies, comparing toenail selenium and cancer risks, showed a significant reduction in preventing prostate cancer risk when toenail selenium concentration was between 0.85 and 0.94 ug/gm. The evidence suggests that the levels of selenium may be a significant factor in combating prostate cancer as well as preventing prostate cancer.
Another study published in the Journal of Urology discovered patients with prostate cancer showed signs of regression over the period of a year when they were placed on a low animal fat diet, soy foods, daily supplementation of vitamin E, vitamin C, and selenium along with moderate exercise. The blood studies showed a reduction in the PSA over a one year period compared to men with localized prostate cancer who did not follow the diet, supplement and exercise program.
Many studies over the past several years have demonstrated selenium may posses anti-cancer properties such as slowing the rate of cell division of cancer cells, inducing cell death of cancer cells and protecting DNA from mutations that may lead to cancer when exposed to known carcinogens. Preventing prostate cancer may include many other natural things that may support good prostate health such as beta-sitosterol which is the most abundant phytosterol in the diet and is used for benign prostatic hypertrophy as well as preventing prostate cancer.
